Ohhh the winter- long, cold & snowy ....except for the brightest flavored oranges of the year - the Sicilian blood oranges (or the 'cheap' oranges as they are referred to around here) arrive in the markets & you can buy them by the box for next to nothing at .50 for 2.2lbs - we buy them by the case!

They vary in color from bright magenta to a tie-dye of oranges & reds.

The colors are so bright, the flavor so sweet - every morning we take turns squeezing these incredibly juicy suckers into a glass & savor it, because before long - they will be gone!
mmmm...boy do I miss that morning tradition.

I almost stopped dead in my tracks last week when I went to my local Kroger supermarket. There, in the produce section, was a huge display of Blood Oranges! I scooped up a dozen and brought them home, where we're enjoying them throughout this miserable Virginia winter week. Yes, another storm is called for this weekend. I left Boston for this?!? At least we've got the memory of Sicily and Blood Oranges to keep us warm . . .
ReplyDeleteLinda it is sooo true! Every morning in the winter, when its soo dark & cold out - we don't even want our tootsies to touch the ground- a glass of fresh squeezed oj is THE BEST way to warm up & remember summer is on its way.....
ReplyDeletegorgeous!! it just makes you want to drink it!!
ReplyDeleteI too have been enjoying blood oranges over the past couple of weeks. (they are coming from california this time of year) such a great flavor and color. Must be a winter fruit all over the world.
ReplyDeleteI like any kind of fruits and blood oranges are my favorite but I do like mine with a bit of a kick. An Oz of Rum does a nice job of warming things up for me and my wife :-)
ReplyDeleteI remember being in Rome and treating myself to a blood orange from the market every morning. Love them.
ReplyDeletemy kids love the Sicilian blood oranges... they hate the traditional oranges but these love them.... strange no!
